Research Fellow, CREATE
Wardliparingga Aboriginal Research Unit, SAHMRI
Karla is a descendant of the Naghir tribe of the Kulkalgul clan, Torres Straits and has spent most of her life in Far North Queensland living and working in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Karla moved to Adelaide in 2007 to complete a PhD at the University of South Australia. Karla’s PhD involved the development, implementation and evaluation of the ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Fitness Program’, which was funded by NHMRC. The 12-week group program was trialled as a pragmatic randomised controlled trial in an urban setting.
Within the CREATE program, Karla will be involved in the synthesis of existing evidence for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, and its translation into guidelines which will be implemented and evaluated in Aboriginal health services. Karla brings with her experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, organisations and communities.
